Format and inclusion of transcriptions

In what format and where should I include a transcript to ensure that audio and video content is accessible to all?

Format of the transcription

A transcription should be embedded in .txt or .html formatnot in .vtt format. These formats are best suited to make the text accessible to all users.

Position of the transcription

The transcription should be located in close proximity to the audio fileideally directly underneath it. It should be easy to find and clearly marked as a link, so users can locate it without difficulty.

Designing an accessible transcript

An accessible transcript contains not only the spoken text, but also additional information that supports comprehension. This includes:

  • Naming the speakers (e.g. "moderator", "interview guest"), to make clear who is speaking.
  • Description of relevant sounds (e.g. applause, laughter) and important visual details that are significant for understanding the situation.

A good transcript thus provides a complete picture of the content and also enables deafblind people to fully grasp the content using braille displays or screen readers.

Automatic transcription with Eye-Able

With our transcription tool, you can upload audio or video files and automatically generate subtitles or a full transcription from them.

How it works:
  1. In our dashboard, go to Transcription > Create transcription.
  2. Upload the file you want to transcribe.
  3. Select the target language and the desired output format (subtitles or transcription).
AI credit consumption:

Please note the consumption of your AI credits. Billing is based on the second of the uploaded file:

  • Audio file: 10 credits per second
  • Video file: 25 credits per second

Guidelines according to WCAG

The requirements for transcripts are set out in the WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines):

  • Success Criterion 1.2.1 "Audio-only and Video-only (Prerecorded)" (Level A):

For prerecorded audio content, a complete text transcript must be provided that includes all spoken content as well as important sounds.

  • Success Criterion 1.2.2 "Captions (Prerecorded)" (Level AA):

For videos with audio, synchronized captions are required, in which speakers should also be identified to avoid misunderstandings.
