Does the Eye-Able Assist contrast mode help to ensure WCAG compliance?

Recommendations for using contrast on your website

We generally recommend adapting the basic design of your website to the WCAG as much as possible. This means, in particular, complying with minimum contrast requirements.

However, WCAG and BITV also allow an alternative view of the website with higher contrast. This means that the requirements for minimum contrast (AA) and extended contrast (AAA) can be met without changing the basic design.

The requirements for this are:

  • The toggle switch to contrast mode itself has good contrast – ideally at least 7:1.
  • The contrast view must contain the same information as the basic view.

You can find further information on this topic directly in the WCAG recommendations.

Our recommendation for implementation

The contrast mode is manually checked when the licence is transferred to your website and adjusted if necessary to ensure that all elements remain clearly visible.

We recommend making our contrast function accessible via an additional button that can be reached from all pages. A good position for this would be in the navigation or in a quick menu, for example.

You can find further information on linking the assist functions to your own controls in the following articles:
