Why manual tests are necessary despite AI Tests

Why should I continue to carry out manual tests despite the AI Tests?

The AI Tests in the Eye-Able Report significantly extend the automated accessibility testing. Nevertheless, manual checks remain an important part of a comprehensive assessment. This article explains why.

What the AI Tests additionally cover

With the AI Tests, it is possible to evaluate test steps automatically that could previously only be checked manually or through guided tests. The AI uses the content-related context of a page – for images, for the structure of content and in further areas, for example.

As a result, the AI Tests close part of the gap between the steps that can be checked fully automatically and the steps that could previously only be checked manually. So additional test steps are added that could not be evaluated automatically before.

You can view which rules are currently covered by the AI Tests directly in the Dashboard via the "View report rules" button on the AI Problems page. There you find an overview of all rules that are checked as part of the AI Tests.

Why manual tests are still necessary

Despite their extended scope, the AI Tests have limits. They do not cover all test aspects that are relevant for a complete assessment of accessibility. Some test steps can still only be sensibly evaluated through a manual check.

The AI Tests are intended to narrow the gap between automated and manual testing – but they cannot close it completely. For a comprehensive assessment, the manual check therefore remains a necessary part.

Outlook

The scope of the AI Tests is being extended step by step. In future, further test steps are to be added, so that the AI Tests cover even more areas. Even then, however, a manual check remains sensible and necessary.
