Why are short words not translated when using plain language?

Overview

When automatically translating texts into simple language, not every section of text is translated. Very short words or short phrases in particular remain unchanged. This is done for a specific reason: the translation requires sufficient context to ensure a meaningful and accurate rendering.

Criteria for translation into plain language

For a section of text to be translated, it must meet one of the following criteria:

  1. The section of text is longer than 30 characters.
  2. The section of text consists of more than five words.
    • To determine the number of words, the text is separated by spaces.
    • The resulting groups are then counted.
