How does the screen reader handle abbreviations and symbols? Is it recommended to avoid them in alternative texts?

Behavior of the screen reader in Eye-Able® Assist

Since the screen reader function of Eye-Able® Assist depends on the browser and operating system being used, its behavior may vary depending on the device.

Most common speech engines read out symbols like "+" as “plus”.

Abbreviations such as “etc.” are also usually read out in full.

Customizing abbreviations

In the Assist configurator within your dashboard, certain abbreviations can be specifically defined to improve the quality of speech output.

To do this, go to the "Pronunciation settings" section. There, you can enter the abbreviation or word and specify under "Replace with" how it should be pronounced by the screen reader.
